Managing Director Transport

The Managing Director Transport has P&L responsibility for VTS Transport B.V. The Managing Director Transport role is crucial for steering the company’s transportation division towards achieving its business goals. He/she is responsible for the overall management of transportation services, ensuring that operations are efficient, cost-effective, and align with the broader objectives of the company.

The Managing Director Transport strategizes, manages, and continually refines the transportation operations (International and Last Mile) of VTS. Goal is to supervise teams to process all shipments, deliveries, networks or routes correctly, with maximum efficiency against minimum costs and maximum quality following customer required service levels. Since this is a high-ranking position, the Managing Director Transport bears significant responsibility; he/she must be able to thrive in an intense, commercial and results-driven environment. He/she reports directly to the C.O.O.

Duties and Responsibilities at VTS:
The Managing Director Transport can perform a large variety of duties amongst them perform the following core tasks:

  • Strategic planning and execution – Develop and implement strategic plans that align with the company’s vision and objectives. Forecast and plan resource requirements based on future needs, including vehicles, technologies, and personnel. Stay informed about industry trends and developments to ensure the company remains competitive.
  • Budget and Financial Oversight – Manage the transportation division’s financial budgets, forecasts, and expenditures. Ensure cost-effectiveness and efficiency in all transportation operations. Work closely with the finance department to analyze financial performance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Operations Management – Responsible for coordinating the day-to-day transportation operations directing major projects. Supervise transport employees and drivers, delegating tasks accordingly, monitoring performance, and conducting regular follow-ups with business objectives.
  • Client and Stakeholder Relations – Build and maintain relationships with key clients, suppliers, and other stakeholders. Address and resolve any issues or conflicts that arise with stakeholders.
  • Identify Opportunities – Hold discussions with stakeholders of customers and board members about strategic direction and analyze financial reports, customer profitability, and other company data. He/she is well equipped to spot trends and opportunities. To further optimize the transportation network from the inside, he/she constantly researches and tests software tools, management methodologies, and workflow processes.
  • Oversee Expenses – Oversee the entire budgeting process for the Transport department, from proposal to expense control. He/she maintains awareness of all financial transactions, ensuring that projects are in line with their allotted budgets and establishing rates with carriers and providers.
  • Drive Compliance and Safety – Compliance is important in transportation, as negligence in following regulations may compromise safety and quality. He/she establishes compliance of all programs with state and federal regulations, including those imposed by the Ministry of Health. In addition, he/she addresses safety concerns and customer complaints promptly. Implement safety protocols to protect company assets, employees, and goods.
  • Partner management – Manages partners / subcontractors of VTS and makes sure performance, costs, compliance, etc are met.
  • Sustainability – Drives sustainability improvements and comes up with / supports initiatives to make VTS futureproof. Stay updated with environmental regulations and ensure that operations are sustainable.
  • Recruit and Train Employees – He/she works closely with HR to recruit employees within the department, such as drivers, dispatchers, and department representatives. After hiring, he/she provides training for development and conduct refreshers, reminding employees to renew certifications as necessary and stay updated with the industry.
  • Continuous Improvement – Encourage a culture of continuous improvement through regular reviews and adjustments to processes. Solicit feedback from clients and employees to enhance service quality and operational efficiency

Skills and Qualifications:
The Transport Director is proactive and agile, taking swift action to effectively execute tasks and projects. Drawing from long-term experience in the transportation industry, he/she takes charge with a vision in mind while using problem-solving skills to develop solutions:

  • Leadership – set the direction for the entire department, providing guidance and mentorship to employees, and taking responsibility for overall performance
  • Transportation expertise – expert in their field, knowledgeable about industry trends, supply chain processes, best practices, and compliance requirements
  • Organizational – drive projects from start to finish and assign responsibilities, keeping track of several processes at once and making sure that deadlines are met
  • Communication – excellent, well-rounded communicators adept at making presentations, facilitating meetings, negotiating contracts, and holding one-on-one conversations
  • Data analysis – to identify project strengths and weaknesses, he/she should be able to synthesize data from multiple sources and distill their findings into action steps for improvement
  • Commercial – has a commercial attitude and drive for new business, is in contact with (stakeholders of) customers, works closely together with the commercial department

For the senior position of Managing Director Transport, an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in management, industrial engineering, or a related field is required. Additionally, you should have over ten years of experience in a management role, preferably with a specialization in transportation. A graduate degree, such as an MBA, is an advantage.
