VTS sorting facility innovation

Innovation

Through strong and continuous innovation, VTS focuses on digitalisation, robotisation and automation within the pharmaceutical supply chain. Our state-of-the-art warehouses, our own fleet of vehicles equipped with advanced refrigeration units and smart data systems demonstrate how innovation contributes to more efficient, cleaner and safer operations.

Innovation as the foundation for quality and growth

Innovation is aimed at making complexity within pharmaceutical logistics manageable. In a highly regulated environment, with minimal tolerance for deviations, stable and predictable processes are essential for quality and delivery reliability. In this way, innovation helps to:

  • Minimising margins of error within GDP and GMP processes
  • Efficient and controlled scaling up of volumes and operational complexity
  • Deploying staff in a targeted manner where they add value and where expertise, supervision and quality assurance are essential

Automation, robotisation and AI are tools to this end, not ends in themselves. They support operations by making processes more consistent, scalable and less prone to error. Real-time insight, data-driven management and smart software highlight deviations at an early stage and enable timely corrective action. In this way, technology contributes directly to efficient processes, risk management and consistent quality within the pharmaceutical supply chain.

Technology that empowers people

At VTS, innovation is not an end in itself, but a way of bringing ideas to life. Ideas that strengthen our services and support our colleagues, so that they are ready to serve our customers every day. Ultimately, for our customers, it all comes down to one thing: ensuring the product reaches the patient safely and in good condition. That principle guides everything we do. Innovations therefore focus on safeguarding product integrity and patient safety and are always validated in accordance with GDP and GMP guidelines.

Innovation at VTS

Furthermore, innovation is designed to support human expertise. Digitalisation, AI and automation take repetitive and error-prone tasks off employees’ hands, bringing structure and predictability to operations. This frees up staff to focus on tasks where human insight is indispensable, such as quality control, supervision and the careful handling of customer-specific processes. Technology thus not only enhances the consistency and scalability of processes, but also strengthens the role of staff in ensuring quality and compliance within a highly regulated pharmaceutical supply chain.

Automation and robotisation in operations

Within warehousing and last-mile operations, automation and robotisation are used in a targeted manner to reduce error-prone and repetitive tasks. Automated sorting systems, autonomous pallet handling and integrated WMS and planning systems ensure predictable lead times and a stable flow of goods. AI applications support planning, deviation analysis and decision-making, integrated directly into operational systems. These innovations enable controlled scaling up without adding extra complexity to operations. Processes remain transparent, repeatable and aligned with the high quality standards of pharmaceutical logistics.

Automated sorting system

This innovation plays a central role in the efficient processing of last-mile orders. By grouping orders by route and delivery time using robots, manual sorting is significantly reduced and a predictable outbound flow is created. This increases processing speed and reduces the risk of errors, whilst maintaining traceability and GDP-compliant record-keeping. The sorting process is directly linked to planning and transport, ensuring that orders are checked and ready for distribution on time, even during peak periods.

An integrated WMS and planning system
By managing warehouse processes, mechanisation and planning from a single data-driven environment, we have real-time insight into status, priorities and capacity. Tasks are dynamically allocated based on current demand and available resources. This ensures consistent execution, rapid course correction in the event of deviations and a scalable operation in which processes remain under control, even as volumes and complexity increase.

Innovation at VTS: Stef van Hagen

A good idea only really counts if it delivers value in practice – for customers and for our people. Innovation is only successful when it leads to better service, higher quality or work that becomes smarter, more enjoyable and more meaningful. In this way, we ensure that ideas do not remain stuck in presentations, but actually make a difference in day-to-day operations.

Innovation Award

VTS was honoured by Logistiek.nl with the Innovation Award within the Top 100 Logistics Service Providers in both 2024 and 2025. This award confirms the way in which we consistently implement automation, robotisation and digitalisation across our operations and lead the way within our sector.
