What is the TAPA standard in the Netherlands?

The so-called TAPA standard is an increasingly frequent discussion topic in the logistics sector. Companies which are active in the supply chain and companies which regularly commission work to the logistics sector will undoubtedly be familiar with this. But what exactly is TAPA? What does the TAPA standard entail? And what are the advantages of a TAPA-certified logistic partner? In this article we explain it to you.

Cargo thefts on the increase

Recent research conducted by the European Parliament regarding cargo thefts in the European Union has revealed that 8.2 billion euros’ worth of cargo and lorries are stolen each year. In the Netherlands alone, the thefts amount to 329 million euros. Briefly stated, the threat of unorganized crime is large and continues to increase. Furthermore, the incidents are becoming increasingly violent. This has got to end.

What is TAPA?

TAPA stands for Transported Asset Protection Association. This is a unique forum in which producers, logistic service providers, transport operators, police, judicial authorities and other interested parties around the world come together. The common goal of this organization and its members is to limit the losses in the logistics chain.

The TAPA certification

TAPA has standardized the security level. In order to maintain this, certain guidelines are used. A service provider or transport user may call itself TAPA-certified if it complies with these guidelines. In this way, it can be shown that the operational processes for the security of goods are properly in place.

More than 600 certified members

TAPA’s membership has grown in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and America and the number of members continues to increase. Currently the organization has more than 600 members. Among them are a number of global players of brand products and their logistic partners. The total turnover of these companies exceeds 900 billion dollars.

The advantages of TAPA for VTS

VTS will also be TAPA certified in the near future. This means that production, transport and storage of our (pharmaceutical) goods satisfy TAPA’s high requirements. By working in accordance with this TAPA standard:

  • VTS is conscious of security risks and takes measures to manage these risks;
  • VTS distinguishes itself from companies which are not TAPA certified in the field of goods security;
  • VTS ensures quality and reliability in the supply chain.

VTS knows that theft and loss of goods in the whole supply chain is commonplace. With the TAPA certification, VTS aims to show that it satisfies all the requirements regarding security and assurance of goods. This way, we are able to pursue a very high level of safety in the field of transport and logistics. The new warehouse is therefore also fully prepared for the TAPA certification which VTS hopes to obtain in the near future.
